One of our clients recently reported a potential solar inverter fault which meant that the mains supply to their solar inverter would intermittently trip. This had reached the stage where the main RCD would not reset unless the Solar PV inverter was switched off. We recently had a call from a client in Ratby, Leicestershire, reporting that one string of a dual string inverter would trip the Trannergy PVI4000TL solar Inverter when isolated. C Gascoigne visited the site and the system was checked and no solar PV fault was found. However, as part of the system check we did discover a faulty main RCD which was was located on the house consumer unit which would not trip under any circumstances. This could have left the customer and his property in danger if left unattended. The RCD unit was replaced from stock on the day and the site left safe once again. As a Fronius Service Partner this enquiry originated from the Fronius help desk. We were informed that the Fronius inverter had fault code 417 showing which indicates a DC card failure. The customer was offered a replacement DC card with a 1 year warranty or a replacement Fronius Galvo 1.5 inverter with a full 5 years’ manufacturers warranty. In this case the customer decided it would be prudent to opt for the latest technology and have a new solar inverter. As part of the works the customer requested that the solar inverter be relocated. It was also noted as part of our site visit that the DC isolator switch was none lockable, a regulatory requirement. This was also rectified as part of the inverter replacement/relocation work. Leamington Spa Solar PV fault diagnosis and fix

C Gascoigne were recently called to a site to locate and provide solar PV fault diagnosis on a suspected fault as PV cable connectors were left unsecured in puddles of water on a roof mounted array. We are currently waiting for a dry day to re-attend and safely remedy the problem. It was also noted whilst on site that the panels had been mounted with the diode boxes at the bottom of the panels. This may lead to water ingress as water flows down the cables and toward the boxes instead of away from the boxes. We were recently approached by a local Parish Church in Loughborough who reported that they had two damaged Suntech STP245S–20/Wd solar panels on the Church roof connected to three SMA Sunny Boy inverters. The solar panels were damaged by failing masonry on the church roof which caused cracks as shown in the images below.
