Commercial Solar PV Installation

Why are Solar PV safety checks recommended?

Solar PV systems can easily be overlooked as they are generally on roofs, out of sight, and out of mind.  They are quite often thought to be low-maintenance benign assets posing little risk due to their location.  However as a DC electricity generator, like all electrical equipment, if installed poorly or damaged it can present significant risks.

Some risks are little understood and again overlooked even by some installers.

Commercial Solar PV Installation

For instance, where a Solar PV array is located on a roof with lightning protection installed, there may be a requirement to tie the system to the lightning protection and install Surge Protection Devices (SPDs).  If these installations are carried out incorrectly then dangerous voltages can enter the building leading to flashovers within the building and a heightened risk of fire.

We regularly come across multi-string systems with no or poor overcurrent protection/fusing which could lead to dangerous overload conditions.

What return can I expect?

Very similar to those on a domestic property.

However, as a business there ould also be added advantages:

How would it work on my business premises?

The system could be installed where ever you had space (roof, field, barn, car park etc) taking in to account the orientation of the panels as this would impact the amount of electricity generated.

The schematic drawing opposite simply outlines how the system would be installed.

It must be borne in mind that:

We can also help with maintenance and repairs of commercial solar PV systems.

How would this impact my business/employees?

There should be no impact on the running of your business whilst the installation takes place.

In addition, as contractors, we are fully aware of the necessity for good Health & Safety planning. As a result we would always ensure that the necessary health and safety risk assessments were undertaken and relevant method statements issued prior to any works being undertaken. As an NICEIC approved contractor you can also count on the quality, compliance and integrity of our electrical installations too.
